Description

The iconic Scottish basket hilt sword, or locally called ‘claidheamh more’ is the traditional sword used in Scotland. This fine example is a Scottish basket-hilt broadsword and dates to around 1730. Characterized by its broad, double-edged blade and distinctive iron guard in the form of an openwork basket, this weapon offered both offensive capability and excellent hand protection. The grip is made of wood and once had a brass wire winding.

The term ‘Claidheamh Mor’ in Gaelic, meaning “big sword”, and can be varied in two types, The large claymore and the basket hilt sword. This type of basket-hilt sword was a symbol of Highland martial pride and remained in use well into the 18th century, particularly during the Jacobite uprisings. Later on, many varieties were adopted in regulated patterns by the British army. The design allowed for powerful cutting strikes while maintaining robust hand defense, an ideal blend for close combat. These swords were often used in combination with a dirk or ‘targe’ shield.

This particular sword features a traditional fullered straight blade and a well-preserved iron basket hilt guard with decorative piercings and scalloped edges, showcasing the craftsmanship typical of the period. The blade is rather thin and very flexible, worthy for battle.
