Description
A fine ‘Khanjar’ dagger from the Ottoman Empire, current day Turkey. The ‘Khanjar’ originates from Persia and was seen in Central and South-Asia, spreading generally from Turkey to India. The ‘Khanjar’ is a curved double edged dagger which was made in a wide variety of materials on the hilt and qualities of blades.
The hilt:
Made of Nephrite, a type of jade which is opaque and pale. The hilt is I-shaped and decorated with a silver filigree washer inlayed with turqoise.
The blade:
The blade is curved, double edged and has a medial ridge running down the entire blade. The steel shows a slight forging pattern with hardened edges and is decorated with gold damascened foliages on the forte. It was placed in a matching scabbard made of two slabs of wood, covered in black leather with two metal fittings which are decorated in typical Ottoman fashion gold work.
