Description

The Endless Knot, also known as the Eternal Knot or ‘Shrivatsa’ is an ancient symbol found in many Asian cultures, particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It represents the interconnectedness of all things, the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth, as well as the unity of wisdom and compassion. With no beginning or end, the knot also symbolizes eternity, harmony, and the interplay of cause and effect (karma)

A finely carved Madurese keris hilt from the 19th century, crafted from rich hardwood with a warm, glossy patina. This elegant piece features intricate floral patterns interwoven with an endless knot motif (galar), symbolizing eternity and interconnectedness. A striking winged Naga emerges from the design, its dynamic form adding a sense of movement and protection. A beautiful example of Madurese artistry and symbolism, a rather fine example within the genre.
