Northern Philippines – Luzon region – 19th century
Materials: Steel, Iron, Horn
Status: Sold
Description
A large and heavy sabre from the Luzon region with Spanish colonial influenced D-shaped hilt. The local term could be defined as ‘Pinuti‘ however judging the profile of the blade it certainly does not resemble a specific type commonly known among collectors today.
The hilt:
European inspired, in fact Spanish, with an iron D-shaped knucklebow ending in a protruding thumb rest. The hilt is made of carved buffalohorn with a brass ferrule and iron riveted pommel.
The blade:
A very heavy and balanced blade with razor sharp cutting edge. One side is flat, while the other side is decorated with a long stretched fuller and former brass inlay. The weight is concentrated near the tip, which makes its very well suitable for slashing. The thick spine starts flat and narrows down towards the tip. Condition: Excellent, some minor ware due to its age.
