Georgian Guria Kindjal
Description
A 19th century Guria kindjal dagger from western Georgia, representing the distinct regional black-sea style of the Caucasus. This example features a twist-core blade, a forging method that creates strength and a subtle patterned surface. A central double fuller with small inlaid gold details reflects the decorative traditions of 19th century craftsmanship in the region.
The hilt is shaped in the typical Gurian form, made from dark horn with iron, gold koftgari bosses and a pronounced lobed pommel. The scabbard leather has been carefully restored using traditional materials and methods, while the rest of the example remains in original condition. On the scabbard is a central iron ring decorated in koftgari with a floral pattern.
Kindjal like this were carried both as weapons and symbols of identity throughout the Caucasus.
