Description
The Jambiya originates in Persia and means ”side” The charasteristics are a J-shaped blade mostly with a central ridge. The Persian traders and mercenaries in India had their own made in India mostly in Hyderabad. This example is a Northern Indian ”Khanjar” with a fine engraved tombak hilt, fittings and a pattern welded blade. The handle is engraved with floral motives and foliage and so is the pommel. The multi-laminated blade has a reinforced armour piercing tip and is made of a very high quality steel. The scabbard has lovely matching fittings wich are hand sawed and also decorated in Tombak technique in North Indian style (gilded copper). A very fine example.
Condition: Good, there is some ware on the blade. The gilt on the ornaments and fittings is in overall good condition. The velvet on the scabbard is a little worn and discoloured.
