A Toraja Dua Lalan sword - Celebes
A very rare so called Dua Lalan sword from the Toraja people. The horn handle is carved in the shape of a hornbill and typical for the Toraja people who live in the mountain area of Central Sulawesi (former Celebes). The blade has a multi-layered pamor with a hardened cutting edge. The scabbard is made of wood with brass and aluminum-like rings. The chape of the scabbard is made of horn with bone inlay and a finely carved pattern. A piece of fabric is knotted to the scabbard surrounded by very fine rotan work. The handle is wrapped with iron wire for a good grip.
This example is made around 1890-1900
